A Champion Beyond Track

Rafer Johnson was an Olympic gold medalist, humanitarian, and one of the most influential figures in the history of Special Olympics Southern California. After a celebrated athletic career that included winning the decathlon at the 1960 Olympic Games, Johnson devoted his life to serving others and expanding opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

In 1969, Johnson helped establish California Special Olympics, which would later become Special Olympics Southern California. Working alongside a dedicated group of volunteers, he helped organize the organization’s first competition and spent decades guiding its growth, serving in numerous leadership roles while advocating for inclusion and opportunity for athletes throughout the region.

Johnson’s commitment to the movement was inspired by his experience at the inaugural Special Olympics Games in 1968, where he witnessed the talent, joy, and determination of athletes with intellectual disabilities. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for advancing inclusion and ensuring that athletes had the opportunity to be seen, celebrated, and empowered.

Today, Rafer Johnson’s legacy lives on through the thousands of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters who continue building more inclusive communities across Southern California. His vision, leadership, and belief in the potential of every athlete remain at the heart of the organization he helped create.

“From the very start in 1969, I wanted to be a part of helping our Special Olympics athletes succeed. I wanted to be on Eunice Shriver’s team as another set of eyes, another set of hands and a heart working to be there for them, finding a way to help them be the best they can be.”
