Special Olympics has helped Tyrone Garrett achieve and experience many new things, and the greatest is yet to come.

Tyrone is one of six Special Olympics Southern California athletes headed to Abu Dhabi for the 2019 Special Olympics World Games from March 14-21.

“When I found out I was going to the World Games, I was so excited,” said Tyrone, who will compete in track and field.

Representing Pomona Valley, Tyrone has participated in Special Olympics for over 20 years. He also competes in floor hockey and bowling, with dreams of playing basketball in the future. Although he loves many things about the organization, he truly loves some healthy competition.

“His favorite thing about Special Olympics is competing in the Summer Games,” said LaShanda Shipp, Tyrone’s coach and sister.

Not only is he excited to compete internationally, but this will be his first time traveling outside of the U.S. While competing in Special Olympics is Tyrone’s self-proclaimed No. 1 hobby, he also enjoys other activities in his free time including: bike riding, swimming, going to the movies, and hanging out with LaShanda.
