Delegations Set for 48th Annual Summer Games

LONG BEACH, Calif. (May 25, 2017) – The 48th annual Special Olympics Southern California Summer Games will begin in 16 days on the campus of California State University, Long Beach. The delegations representing the nine regions within SOSC are set, consisting of more than 1,100 athletes throughout the Southern California footprint.

Twenty-seven delegations have been named for the 2017 Games, which begin Saturday, June 10 with the Opening Ceremony at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Rafer Johnson Breakfast With Champions at 11. The Breakfast will feature UCLA Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Alford as keynote speaker. Competitions will begin at 12 noon. The Games continue on Sunday, June 11 with competitions beginning at 9 a.m. followed by Closing Ceremony at 3:00 p.m.

California State University, Long Beach will host the Games for the 20th time. Venues for this year’s Games will include The Walter Pyramid (basketball), on campus Baseball Field (bocce), 49er Pool (swimming), Jack Rose Track (track and field), Gold Mine Gymnasium (basketball), East Gymnasium (gymnastics), Student Union Ballroom (Breakfast With Champions and Dream House Raffle Grand Prize Drawing) and Recreation Park Nine Golf Course, which is off campus (5000 East 7th Street).

Summer Games will be more than just competitions. A full slate of activities and events will be part of the two days at CSULB. These include a Young Athletes Rising Stars Basketball Experience; Healthy Athletes providing free health care for all athletes; a Young Athletes Festival; Family Pavilion; Rafer’s Boutique (official store for Special Olympics Southern California and Summer Games); and The Festival, a fan experience featuring live entertainment, food, law enforcement exhibits, and Fan Zone booths to create cheer gear.
