David Amavisca’s involvement with Special Olympics Southern California started as a parent, like many. David and his wife, Yndira, then branched out into volunteering, and specifically coaching.

David’s impact has reached far more than just his son, Elias, as he was named the 2018 Floor Hockey Coach of the Season. David, a Santa Maria resident, was selected from a pool of nominees submitted by the regions.

Among the highlights this season, David’s Northern Santa Barbara Ducks team earned a gold medal at a regional competition in February.

In addition to floor hockey, David has also coached softball. He said watching the athletes expand their comfort zones and their interaction with one another in a positive environment are among the things that bring him back.

“I love that Special Olympics is here for adults and children with physical and learning disabilities,” David said. “It allows them to participate and learn a sport that gives them the confidence to succeed.”

When he’s not coaching, David enjoys spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow up.
